James (Jim) Freeman, AIA, Co-Founder & Principal of FSC Architects visited Sri Lanka to start a new luxury hotel design. Tourist arrivals to the country have been increasing year on year since 2009 with a 30% increase in 2011 alone. Western Europe currently provides the biggest inbound arrivals but South Asia is not far behind. Interestingly just over 80% of travelers state ‘pleasure’ as their purpose of visit which shows the massive potential for hospitality design. The number of tourism beds has only increased by around ten per cent since 2001 but occupancy has gone up from approximately 40% to 80% over the same period.
