Hawaiian Sense of Place
In collaboration with VCBO, the architect or record for this project, as the design assist architects, FSC was tasked lead the concept design of this historic 350,000 plus sq.ft. re-development of the campus.
To create a Hawaiian sense of place, the organization of the structures in this project is inspired by native Hawaiian principle of well-being – which means having a constant connection to one’s ancestors. In this design we are using this motif to signify our connection to our literal, our spiritual, and our educational forebearers as well as our Heavenly Parents. This connection is through the piko - the word for the navel in Hawaiian. Hawaiians believe there are conceptually three piko(s): (1) piko po’o, (2) piko na’au, and (3) piko ma’i.
