From the mist-shrouded peaks of the verdant forested Wuyi Mountains and the nearby Wuyi Palace—the former renowned for its legendary oolong tea and recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the latter for its significant architecture and courtyards—emerges a 300-room resort that is exemplary contemporary regionalism.
The design reimages the region’s timeless traditions and natural forms with modern architecture that transcends the Palace’s rich cultural and architectural heritage, and the flowing layered rhythms of the mountainous terrain—the fusion of the three, like a new genre simultaneously palatial and organic, creates a unique sense of place with authentic experiences. The arrival courtyard size and symmetry is reminiscent of the Palace’s, the main building (lobby and restaurants) uses the formal bay hierarchy of Chinese palaces, and appears to rise out of the mountain with local stone on the lower floors transitioning to metal tree-like columns branching out to support generous canopy-like roof overhangs. The inventive roof corners include the rise of traditional Chinese architecture but then arc back down at the tips like the layered mountains.
